Lucky Strike, Owen/Other, R, by [personal profile] catslash    - Torchwood fic
He's surprised as hell to feel a touch on his arm two nights later and turn to find Michael there, smiling self-consciously and asking to buy him a drink.

Court Documents from the Siegel Case, via Dean Trippe ([profile] dryponder    )
So, some court documents revealing correspondence between Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and DC have been released to the public, and they're totally crazy.

Your Semi-Regular Watchmen Spam by [personal profile] sairobi
In other news, I can already tell I am going to be a misfit fan because a) I'm willing to give the movie a chance b) I don't think I'm morally superior for having read the book prior to 2008 and c) I believe Alan Moore is a fallible entity. Thanks, Fandom Secrets!

Socio-economic experiences in Egypt by [personal profile] slit
I hate haggling. In the movies it looks so easy. He wants $400 for that carpet; you offer him $50; after some charming banter in broken English you settle for maybe $125 and both of you walk away feeling like you got a deal. What's missing there is the pervasiveness of it, and the level of dignity at stake in every minor encounter.

The Walk by Ryan Pequin ([profile] ryanpeq   )
A short comic dealing with dementia - very beautiful in its simplicity.

"An Interview with John Campbell" via The New Yorker
"I have recently come into an excess of happiness, and I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out what to do with it. It was in little piles on the sidewalk, so I brought it inside before whoever owned it could take it back. I have been putting it in drawers and underneath furniture and I have started to stuff my house’s insulation with it. I forget what I wanted it for to begin with."

Missing the point by a mile-or leagues, rather-Or, Did Alan Moore even read Jules Verne? by [profile] bellatrys
What it is that is so nasty, is what Carmen Van Kerckhove has tagged as "hipster racism" and which A.J. Plaid further defined as "ideas, speech, and action meant to denigrate another’s person race or ethnicity under the guise of being urbane, witty (meaning “ironic” nowadays), educated, liberal, and/or trendy." That's totally what's going on, in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen's treatment of Nemo, the Abercrombie & Fitchiness of it, with the addition of an excuse that we are far too familiar with in fandom - the claim that this is just reflecting the original source material/historical setting/viewpoint of that era, so it would be inaccurate to show the characters in a more enlightened way.

Someone is WRONG on the INTERNET by [personal profile] slit
I would also, for reasons I hope should be obvious if you’ve read this far, take issue with the idea that this author’s interpretation is more feminist than the original. And that’s fine, I defend people’s right to write whatever regardless of where it lands on my feminist meter. But I also feel like there’s a lot of you-go-grrrl, publish away, screw the fundies! in this discussion, positing sex against religion as if that’s the issue, that’s based on an inaccurate understanding of the original story and its place in Islamic tradition.

Beauty in the Strangest Places, Martha/Tosh, PG by [profile] mairona   - Torchwood fic
There’s ugliness in Torchwood as there is everywhere, but somehow it doesn’t seem as dark as the rest of time and space, when there’s quiet moments like this, when it’s just Martha and Tosh, and Tosh is looking at her like she’s a guardian angel they’d be lost without.

"Russia trying to crush democracy, Georgia leader says"

Those efforts have been undermined by Russia's annexation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, treating the Georgian regions as Russian provinces, his column said.

"Russians advance in west Georgia" via BBC.co.uk

"EU tightens Iran nuclear sanctions" via CNN.com
The new EU restrictions go slightly beyond existing U.N. trade sanctions and are designed to deny public loans or export credits to companies trading with Iran.

"Yemen divided on vice and virtue" via BBC.co.uk
Mr Saleh has yet to comment on Sheikh Zindani's initiative, but Ms Hugaira believes his movement is a symptom of politics in flux ahead of parliamentary elections next April. "Zindani's committee represents a big threat that could close the space for [women's organisations] in civil society," she says.
